Some may think moving to a new city is scary.  But, moving to a new city can be an exciting adventure.  It just depends on how you look at it.  No matter how you look at it.  It can be a little daunting when you think about getting acclimated to a new place.  You have to do everything from finding the grocery store and your new fave restaurant to getting to know people.  Here are few tips to help you get acclimated a little faster and make your new city feel like home.

Get Acquainted with your Surroundings

It’s all about the basics.  Locate the nearest grocery store, post office, pharmacy, park, shopping mall, movie theater and coffee shop. Try Google maps for a quick way to find what’s around you.  Or, simply take a walk or a drive around the area.  Knowing where to go for staples is a great way to start feeling more at home in your new location.

Find your Local “Go To” Spots

Locate a favorite coffee shop, bookstore or bar and go there often.  Before you know it you’ll become a familiar face in the community — one that’s recognizable and greeted as you walk in the door.  You’ll feel at home in no time.

Take Advantage of Work Outings

Happy hours. Lunch. Karaoke.  Whatever the event, just say yes.  Going on work outings is a great way to bond with your coworkers which will make working side by side a lot more comfortable.  Plus, it will give you a chance to meet other people who may end up becoming good friends.

Introduce Yourself to Neighbors.  Ask for their recommendations on the best grocery stores, restaurants and movie theaters.  Everyone likes to be asked for recommendations.  And in the process you might find common ground and the beginning of a new friendship.

Use Your Hobbies to Meet Other People

Join social groups based on your hobbies (i.e. a book club, sports league, or class at the gym).  Websites like www.meetup.com can help you find clubs and groups who are getting together to enjoy activities like hiking, wine tastings, concerts and more.

Volunteer to Meet Nice People

Volunteering is a great way to meet people with a desire to give back to the community.  Typically, volunteers are nice people who love to welcome others to serve at a soup kitchen, animal shelter or youth group.  Plus, you’ll be making new friends and helping others in the process.

Be a Tourist for a Day or Weekend

Strap on your backpack and slide into some sneakers and do a little sightseeing.  That’s a great way to get to know your new city.  Take a walking or bus tour, check out the historical monuments, explore a local park, or stop by an interesting looking restaurant.  You’ll learn a little history, get to know your way around and feel more at home before you know it.

Getting to know your new city can seem like a daunting task.  But if you give these tips a try and really get out in your community you’ll feel at home in no time.
